Sukkur: Ghulam Asghar Kanasro, Project Director of the Sindh Flood Emergency Rehabilitation Project (SFERP), conducted an extensive inspection of roadworks and public facilities rehabilitated with World Bank funding across Sukkur, Shikarpur, and Khairpur districts.

On Sunday, Kanasro, accompanied by the SFERP team, evaluated the progress of road and infrastructure upgrades in these flood-affected regions. In Sukkur, the inspection focused on major roads such as the Chimni Pitafi to Thikratho via Roopher route and the Dadloi Cheechor road. In Shikarpur, the team reviewed roads connecting Madeji Dakhan to Khanpur, as well as routes via old and new Laliyoon, Murshidabad, Jorakh Brohi, and Serwar Kot. In Khairpur, key roads assessed included those from Makhdoom Chowk to Ustad Jamauddin Kalhoro, Mithri to Hussainabad Narodhoro, and National Highway Bagh Bachra Mehrabpur to Balo Jo Kharo.

During a media briefing in Sukkur, Kanasro reported significant progress in the road rehabilitation efforts. Out of 143 flood-affected roads totaling 830 kilometers, 45 roads amounting to 226 kilometers have been completed. An additional 30 roads, covering 191 kilometers, are expected to be finished within the next 15 days. The remaining 68 roads are scheduled for completion by the end of the year. These rehabilitated roads are equipped with resilient embankments designed to endure future climate shocks and support cost-effective expansions.

Kanasro also updated on other critical rehabilitation efforts. He noted that 114 water supply and 23 drainage schemes in Umer Kot, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Badin, and Shaheed Benazir Abad are on track for completion by January 2025. Additionally, ongoing work on 273 water supply and 124 drainage schemes in Jamshoro, Naushehro Feroz, Dadu, Khairpur, Jacobabad, and Qambar Shahdad Kot is benefiting approximately 3.9 million rural residents.
In terms of emergency response infrastructure, Kanasro confirmed that the construction of 10 District Headquarters for Rescue is approximately 75 percent complete. Sixteen satellite stations have been fully constructed and will be operational upon the completion of staff training at the Rescue Training Academy in Lahore. Kanasro expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of the rehabilitation work, highlighting the project’s dedication to restoring vital infrastructure and public services in the flood-affected regions.
