ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman, praised China’s ascension as a prominent global power and its substantial impact on international dynamics, particularly in the Global South. Speaking at the “Friends of Silk Road-3rd Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC” organized by the Pakistan China Institute, Rehman underscored the importance of the Third Plenary Session under President Xi Jinping’s leadership.
Senator Rehman reflected on the deep-seated and historical ties between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Communist Party of China (CPC), highlighting the role of former leaders such as Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and Asif Ali Zardari in nurturing this relationship. “The PPP boasts the oldest relationship with the CPC, cultivated by our leadership,” she affirmed. She lauded the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a transformative opportunity for Pakistan, noting its potential to significantly advance the country’s development.
The Senator emphasized the environmental dimension of the project, specifically the Green CPEC Initiative, which aims to enhance Pakistan’s sustainability through carbon reduction and improved environmental governance. “The CPC’s Third Plenary Session has emphasized green development, including measures for carbon and pollution reduction and better environmental governance,” she explained. Highlighting the Karot Hydropower Project as a model of this vision, Senator Rehman noted its substantial environmental and economic benefits.
Senator Rehman pointed out that the project, which utilizes advanced hydropower technology, will cut CO2 emissions by 3.5 million tons annually and provide over 3.2 billion kWh of clean energy each year. This output supports five million people with electricity and creates approximately 4,500 jobs annually. “Projects like Karot epitomize China’s commitment to sustainable development and showcase its role in advancing green technology,” she said.
