KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has voiced strong support for the recent initiative to relocate bus terminals outside Karachi, despite encountering significant resistance from some bus operators. These operators have taken legal action against the move, alleging that it is based on false and fabricated grounds. According to Memon, these operators are leveraging legal maneuvers to resist the relocation, motivated by personal interests rather than legitimate concerns. He has criticized their actions as an attempt to pressure public officials and disrupt the implementation of a well-considered policy.
In his detailed statement, Memon, who oversees multiple departments including Information, Transport, Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control, reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to ensuring that the transfer of bus terminals is carried out as planned. He stressed that this initiative is crucial for addressing longstanding issues related to illegal bus stands within the city. The decision to relocate these terminals is driven by a need to reduce congestion and improve urban infrastructure by moving the terminals out of densely populated urban areas.
Memon explained that the provision of a free shuttle service to the new bus terminal is a measure designed to facilitate the transition for both commuters and transport operators. Despite this effort, he noted that some bus operators have responded by challenging the move legally. However, Memon assured that the Sindh government will not be swayed by these challenges and will continue to implement the relocation plan. He emphasized that the relocation of the terminals aligns with court orders and legal directives.
This move is part of a broader strategy to enforce regulations and ensure that transport operations within Karachi adhere to established legal standards. Memon called on all stakeholders, including bus operators and transport companies, to cooperate with the law and respect the regulatory process. Recognizing the difficulties faced by transport operators during this transition, Memon assured that the Sindh government is mindful of these challenges. Efforts will be made to address the concerns of transporters while ensuring that the needs and convenience of the general public are prioritized.
Sindh minister indicated that ongoing negotiations with transport operators will focus on finding mutually acceptable solutions and mitigating any adverse impacts on their businesses. The government’s approach aims to balance regulatory enforcement with practical considerations, ensuring that the relocation of bus terminals leads to a more organized and efficient transportation system in the city.
