KARACHI: The Sindh government approved a major funding package of Rs21.53 billion to repair and restore Karachi’s crumbling road network. Officials said the move was aimed at easing traffic congestion and reviving economic activity in the city.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. Senior officials including Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Planning and Development Chairman Najam Shah, and representatives from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation attended the session.
The chief minister sanctioned Rs13 billion specifically for the rehabilitation of the city’s roads. He emphasized that improving infrastructure would ensure smoother movement for residents and support local businesses. Public convenience and urban safety, he said, remained top priorities for the government.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab presented a detailed briefing on the condition of the city’s streets. He identified 409 roads in dire need of repair. The local government minister confirmed that patchwork repairs would be carried out on around 400 roads across Karachi’s seven districts. Nine roads were slated for complete reconstruction.
In addition, the chief minister added that projects related to roads, sewerage, and water supply would cost roughly Rs12.57 billion. He approved another Rs8.53 billion for projects including roads, drains, and street lighting. Work on the rehabilitation of 26 major arteries was ordered to begin immediately.
Murad Ali Shah directed all concerned departments to complete the projects transparently and to a high standard. He also instructed the finance department to release funds without delay, warning that any holdup could hinder progress. Officials said the approval marked one of the largest infrastructure investments in Karachi in recent years.
They stressed that the funding was not only aimed at fixing roads but also at improving mobility, safety, and the city’s overall economic environment. Residents of Karachi have long complained about potholes, traffic jams, and poor road conditions. Authorities said the new funding package would address these issues systematically and could transform the city’s transport infrastructure.
