SUKKUR: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has approved the construction of mini fish harbors at Keti Bandar and Shah Bandar, marking a major step toward revitalizing the coastal economy of Thatta and Sujawal.
The Rs1.35 billion project, to be completed in three years, aims to empower small-scale fishermen, promote sustainable livelihoods, and reduce pressure on the Karachi Fish Harbor. Supported through provincial and international funding, it will decentralize fish exports and strengthen Sindh’s maritime economy.
The decision was made at a meeting at the Chief Minister’s House, attended by Fisheries Minister Muhammad Ali Malkani and Secretary Dr Kazim Jatoi, who briefed the CM on the urgent need for regional harbors. He said Karachi’s facility has long exceeded its capacity, causing delays and financial losses for fishermen.
The project, proposed for inclusion in the Annual Development Program 2025–26, will include berthing spaces, cold storage, repair stations, and eco-friendly waste systems. These features will improve efficiency, hygiene, and sustainability.
Calling the project, a “lifeline for Sindh’s coastal belt,” Minister Malkani said it would generate jobs and encourage responsible fishing. Training will also be provided on post-harvest management and export standards.
Chief Minister Shah said Keti and Shah Bandar, once historic maritime hubs, would be developed in two phases — first mini harbors, then expanded port facilities. He said their location near Karachi made them ideal future centres for trade and tourism.
He added, “This initiative restores dignity and prosperity to our fishing communities, laying the foundation for a resilient and sustainable coastal economy.”
