KARACHI: Karachi marked a major infrastructure milestone on Monday as the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah formally inaugurated the Korangi Causeway Bridge, a project aimed at improving connectivity between Korangi, Landhi and surrounding areas.
The six-lane bridge spans 1.4 kilometers across the Malir River and has been built to modern engineering standards. Shah said it was designed to ensure uninterrupted travel during Karachi’s frequent monsoon downpours. The bridge is 26 meters wide and was constructed at a cost of Rs6.135bn.
Work began in July 2023 and was completed in January 2026. Its opening was welcomed by commuters, traders and industrial operators who have long faced congestion and flood-related disruptions along the corridor. Officials said the bridge would reduce travel time, ease traffic flow and improve the efficiency of commercial and industrial activity in one of Pakistan’s largest urban centers.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Sindh chief minister Murad Ali Shah described the project as a landmark achievement in the province’s efforts to modernize infrastructure. He said the bridge was not only a practical solution for daily commuters but also a resilient structure capable of withstanding increasingly unpredictable seasonal flooding.
Alongside the opening, Shah outlined further measures to strengthen urban safety and support businesses. He said 34 new fire tenders had been procured and announced plans to merge all rescue and emergency services into a single institution to improve response times. He also said audits of high-occupancy buildings, particularly commercial centers, would begin before Ramadan to ensure public safety as shopping activity increases.
In a separate announcement, the chief minister said financial relief would be provided to shopkeepers affected by past disruptions. Under the Sindh Economic Development Fund, eligible shopkeepers will be offered interest-free loans of up to Rs10m, with the government acting as guarantor and covering interest costs.
He added that Rs500,000 in immediate subsistence support would also be provided, while assessments of business losses were under way in coordination with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
