KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a high-level meeting to discuss a comprehensive fire safety audit of government, private and commercial buildings across the province.
Murad Ali Shah said the initiative aimed to institutionalize safety protocols and protect lives and property. He stressed that a full audit of key buildings would no longer be optional. He said all commercial, private and government buildings must be equipped with modern fire prevention systems. Emergency exits must be clearly marked, and entry and exit routes kept unobstructed.
The move, he added, would strengthen emergency preparedness at both district and taluka levels, allowing authorities to respond effectively to unexpected incidents. The government has identified 2,368 buildings in the initial audit phase. These include 898 in Sukkur, 562 in Karachi, 540 in Hyderabad, 171 in Shaheed Benazirabad, 143 in Larkana and 54 in Mirpurkhas.
The meeting was attended by provincial ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon and Nasir Hussain Shah, adviser Giyan Chand Israni, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, the chief minister’s principal secretary Agha Wasif, Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, local government secretary Waseem Shamshad, additional IG Zulfiqar Larik, rehabilitation secretary Nisar Memon, SBCA director general Muzammil Halipoto, P&D director general Altaf Sario, PDMA director general Salman Shah, the chief fire officer and other senior officials.
A phased timeline for compliance has been approved, the chief minister’s spokesperson said. Fire alarm panels, portable firefighting equipment and emergency signage will be inspected. The installation and operation of smoke detectors, central alarm systems and fire hydrants have been made mandatory. Buildings must also have effective electrical wiring and automatic fire suppression systems.
Murad Ali Shah directed the chief secretary to ensure SBCA and PDMA teams meet building managements and issue clear compliance deadlines. He warned that immediate action would follow in cases of non-compliance. He said basements and mezzanine floors must be used strictly for parking. Their use for shops or warehouses will not be allowed.
