KARACHI: Sindh’s senior minister and provincial minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, visited Karachi Film School in Korangi, where he attended the screening of student-made films and interacted with aspiring filmmakers.
During the visit, students briefed the minister on their projects, sharing insights into their creative work. Speaking to the media, Sharjeel Inam Memon noted that this was his second visit to the film school, Pakistan’s only institution offering a one-year diploma in filmmaking. He said the school provides a platform for young talent to build careers and deliver positive messages to audiences through film and drama.
Highlighting the challenges faced by the local film industry, the minister remarked that India has produced over a hundred films aimed at defaming Pakistan, despite Pakistan’s decisive victories in the “battle for truth.” He expressed concern over the closure of cinemas across the country, lamenting the shortage of quality content, and promised that the Sindh government would fully support the younger generation producing meaningful work.
He added that the Sindh government plays a key role in promoting drama and film, and will fund good scripts for film festivals. Referring to the government-backed film Mera Lyari, he noted that the movie showcases the real faces of Lyari, with the release to be decided by the board. He emphasised that cinema has the power to project a positive image of Pakistan internationally, highlighting the country’s achievements in combating terrorism, its responsible nuclear status, and its rich tourism potential.
Sharjeel Inam Memon further announced plans to discuss a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees for film school students and pledged to strengthen the institution under public-private partnership initiatives, ensuring top-quality training for young filmmakers. He also cited Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Oscar-winning films as an inspiration, expressing hope that students of Karachi Film School will one day create Oscar-winning films themselves.
