KARACHI: The Supreme Court’s Karachi registry has dismissed the Sindh government’s appeal against a contempt of court petition concerning the refusal to recruit staff under the “fotgi quota” in the police department. A three-member bench hearing the case declared the appeal ineffective.
During the proceedings, the bench questioned the Supreme Court’s suo moto notice on the matter, with Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar asking whether it was appropriate to issue notices to the federal and provincial governments and continue the case on its own initiative.
The Additional Advocate General informed the court that numerous cases related to the “fotgi quota” had emerged following the verdict, with more expected to surface. The petitioner, Muhammad Ali, told the court he had already received an appointment letter for a Grade One clerk position in the Rapid Response Force (RRF) before the Supreme Court’s decision.
The petitioner added that the Sindh High Court had disposed of his petition. Justice Mazhar remarked that handling the case suo moto had national implications and suggested that such a significant issue ideally required a constitutional or larger bench.
