AHMEDABAD: South Africa’s disciplined bowling, underpinned by David Miller’s blistering half-century, dismantled India by 76 runs in a Super Eight encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
The defeat ended India’s 13-match unbeaten streak in T20 World Cups, dating back to their semi-final loss to England in 2022, and was their first setback in 18 ICC tournament matches, the last being the 2023 World Cup final against Australia at the same venue. Asked to chase 188, India never gained momentum, being bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.
Shivam Dube fought a lone battle with 42 runs, while Hardik Pandya and captain Suryakumar Yadav contributed 18 each. Only Abhishek Sharma (15) and Washington Sundar (11) reached double figures against South Africa’s disciplined attack. South Africa’s bowling was led by Marco Jansen with four wickets and Keshav Maharaj with three crucial scalps in the 15th over.
Corbin Bosch claimed two, while captain Aiden Markram took one. India struck early with Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh reducing South Africa to 20 for three in four overs, but Miller and Dewald Brevis revived the innings with a 97-run fourth-wicket stand off 49 balls. Brevis scored 45 off 29, while Miller’s 63 off 35 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, anchored the total.
Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten on 44, pushing South Africa to 187 for seven. Bumrah returned three for 15, supported by Arshdeep (two), Varun Chakravarthy, and Dube (one each), but India’s effort fell short.
