KARACHI: In a significant development on Wednesday, an additional district and sessions judge acquitted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Imran Qureshi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tariq Bajari, and other accused in a case related to an alleged robbery in Karachi’s Orangi Town.
The court’s decision came after the acquittal plea submitted by the defendants was accepted. During the hearing, the prosecution failed to identify the accused as responsible for the incident and admitted that there was no involvement of SSP Imran Qureshi, DSP Tariq Bajari, and the other defendants. Furthermore, the prosecution did not present any evidence to support the charges against them.
The plaintiff also filed a no-objection certificate regarding the acquittal plea. Lawyer Amir Qureshi, representing the plaintiff, stated that the plaintiff had requested in writing that the case should not proceed against the accused. The allegations stemmed from a complaint lodged at the Pirabad police station, accusing the officers of robbing approximately Rs15 million from the house of a citizen named Shakirullah. However, the interim challan filed in December 2023 had already declared SSP Imran Qureshi and the other accused as innocent, citing a lack of evidence.
This acquittal marks a significant turn in the case, highlighting the absence of incriminating evidence against the high-ranking police officials. The case had garnered considerable attention, raising questions about the accountability and transparency within the police force. The court’s verdict is expected to have widespread implications, not only for the individuals involved but also for future legal proceedings against law enforcement officers accused of similar misconduct.
