After a period of diplomatic tension, the South Asian nation restored US confidence, emerging as a pivotal anchor for regional stability

    BY Amjad Qaimkhani

WASHINGTON: Pakistan has re-established itself in Washington as a key and reliable partner, demonstrating what analysts have called strategic prudence. After a period of strained relations, the South Asian country managed to regain the confidence of the United States, positioning itself as a cornerstone of regional stability.

Relations between India and the US, once considered strong allies, have entered a deep freeze. According to The Diplomat, New Delhi is now facing fifty percent tariffs on key American imports and has been denied a presidential visit. The diplomatic chill followed India’s refusal to accept Washington’s mediation in the May 2025 conflict with Pakistan, leaving the US frustrated and recalibrating its approach in the region.

Observers note that Pakistan capitalized on the situation, turning what could have been a regional setback into a strategic opportunity. Islamabad publicly praised President Donald Trump’s role as a mediator and emphasized its willingness to cooperate on international security issues. Analysts say this move helped restore the old pillars of the US-Pakistan relationship, particularly in counterterrorism and defence cooperation.

In July 2025, the two countries finalized a major trade agreement, significantly reducing tariffs and opening avenues for increased commercial engagement. Trump also announced plans for joint development of major oil reserves, signaling renewed economic collaboration. The initiatives reflected a mutual interest in strengthening ties beyond immediate security concerns.

December 2025 saw another milestone when the US approved the upgrade of Pakistan’s F-16 aircraft, reinforcing Islamabad’s military capabilities and deepening defence ties. Sources close to the White House report that Trump and his advisers have expressed strong discontent with the Indian government’s handling of regional issues, further elevating Pakistan’s strategic importance.

Experts argue that Pakistan’s approach has enhanced its influence on the global stage. By demonstrating pragmatism and diplomatic agility, the country has secured a prominent place in Washington’s foreign policy considerations. This renewed partnership has not only reaffirmed Pakistan’s role in counterterrorism and regional stability but also strengthened its economic and defence links with one of the world’s most powerful nations.
