KHAIRPUR: Students were urged to prioritise social engagement and voluntary work alongside their studies at a seminar on the role of youth in nation building held at Shah Abdul Latif University.

The one-day event, organised jointly by the university, the Sindh government’s sports and youth affairs department and Bhittai Social Watch and Advocacy during Students’ Week, brought together academics, development professionals and young people for a discussion on civic responsibility.

Felix Kolbitz, country director of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Pakistan, delivered the keynote address, focusing on labour rights, youth empowerment, economic justice and social democracy. In an interactive session, he told students that academic grades alone were no longer enough.

“We don’t need your GPA. We need to see what you have done beyond academics. Show us your voluntary work. Show us your contribution to society,” he said, encouraging them to take part in community service and social initiatives.

Vice chancellor Prof Dr Yousuf Khushk praised the organisers and said young people had a decisive role in shaping the country’s future. He stressed the importance of volunteerism, community engagement and public service.

The proceedings were conducted by Dr Ali Raza Lashari and followed by a question and answer session. The keynote speaker and the vice chancellor also visited a science expo arranged by the university’s departments of physics and electronics and commended the efforts of Prof Dr Farman Ali Mangi and his team for organising the exhibition.
