SUKKUR: The Spokesperson for the Sindh Government and Mayor of Sukkur, Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh, stated that some individuals are conspiring against him and Sukkur city by offering bribes, but he is not concerned about them. Despite continuous rain over the past 22 hours, 95 percent of the city’s areas have been cleared of water. He acknowledged that issues arose in Ghanta Ghar and Degree College due to generator failure, but alternative solutions have been provided. He assured that there will be no problems during the upcoming rain spell.
According to him, Sukkur experienced the highest rainfall in Sindh over the past 22 hours, with 137 mm of rain causing issues in some areas. However, these problems have been addressed. He expressed confidence that no part of the city will experience flooding during the next monsoon season due to the measures in place. He noted that, for the first time in 70 years, the old Sukkur area remained flood-free due to improved arrangements, and there is currently no waterlogging in the area. Backup machinery has been installed at 57 disposal stations across Sukkur city to ensure a prompt response to any emergency.
Sheikh further stated that work on the project to address the issues at Ghanta Ghar Chowk in the city center will commence in September 2024. He explained that tackling this problem during the monsoon season would have caused issues in other areas. He also mentioned that out of the allocated two billion rupees for this project, one billion eighty crores have not yet been released. False news is being circulated on social media claiming that the Rs2 billion project for disposal has failed to change the situation at Ghanta Ghar.
