SUKKUR: Sher Ali alias Shero Mehar, the prime suspect in the high-profile killing of senior journalist Jan Mohammad Mahar, was gunned down along with his son in a police-led intelligence-based operation in the lawless Katcha region of Shikarpur. The action, carried out in the notorious hideouts of Qadrani Jatoi dacoits under the jurisdiction of Bachal Bhayo police station, marked a significant breakthrough in the months-long investigation into Mahar’s targeted killing.
According to SSP Shikarpur Shahzeb Chachar, the police cordoned off all entry and exit points to the area before launching the offensive, which culminated in the deaths of Shero Mehar and his son during an intense exchange of fire. Mehar, long considered one of Sindh’s most wanted criminals, carried a bounty of Rs 5 million and was believed to have been shielded for years by a complex web of criminal and political protection.
DIG Larkana Nasir Aftab Pathan said the elimination of Mehar reflects the police’s commitment to protecting public life and restoring order in regions plagued by dacoit-led violence. Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar and IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon both confirmed the operation’s outcome and termed it a milestone in the pursuit of justice for Jan Mohammad Mahar.
