KARACHI: The results of the Syndicate elections at the University of Karachi (KU) were announced on Thursday, following polling for four faculty seats and one officers’ seat at the Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium.
The elections aimed to fill four seats on the Syndicate from the constituencies of professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers, alongside one seat reserved for officers. According to the university’s registrar and returning officer, Professor Dr Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, the successful candidates were Professor Dr Muhammad Haris Shoaib, Dr Mohsin Ali, Syed Ghufran Alam, and Shumaila Samad Khan.
In the professors’ constituency, Professor Dr Muhammad Haris Shoaib was elected with 60 votes, while Professor Dr Anila Amber Malik received 31 votes and Professor Dr Muhammad Ali 13 votes. Dr Mohsin Ali secured the associate professors’ seat with 67 votes, defeating Dr Muhammad Ayaz, who received 22 votes.
Syed Ghufran Alam emerged victorious in the assistant professors’ constituency with 135 votes, followed by Dr Nida Ali with 78 votes and Dr Syed Shah Hasan with four votes. For the lecturers’ seat, Shumaila Samad Khan won with 32 votes, while Dr Kashif Riaz secured 16 votes and Syed Naseer Akhtar 12 votes.
For the officers’ seat on the Syndicate, Dr Muhammad Hassan Auj was elected with 54 votes, defeating Muhammad Rashid Ali Qureshi, who received 14 votes, and Arman Ahmed, who secured four votes. The newly elected members will serve a three-year term, beginning from the date of the first Syndicate meeting.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi extended his congratulations to the successful candidates, wishing them success in their new roles and contributions to the university’s governance.
