TEHRAN: Iran has warned that any attack on its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would be treated as a declaration of war against the entire Muslim world, raising tensions amid renewed rhetoric from US and Israeli figures.
According to a British news agency, Iran’s parliamentary commission on national security said in a statement that any attempt on Khamenei’s life would prompt the issuing of a religious edict for jihad. The commission warned that such an act would provoke a response from what it described as “soldiers of Islam” across the world.
The warning follows comments made last week by a former US ambassador to Israel, who claimed that President Donald Trump could attempt to have Iran’s supreme leader killed. The former ambassador argued that Khamenei, now 86, was elderly and unwell, and said Iran required new leadership.
In a separate post on the social media platform X, the former envoy said the US would soon deploy a major naval fleet to the Middle East. He claimed this would not only make an attack on Iran easier but would also strengthen American defensive preparations in the event of retaliation by Tehran. The remarks came as Iran’s supreme leader accused the US president of being directly involved in violence, protests and killings inside Iran. Iranian officials have repeatedly blamed Washington for fomenting unrest and instability in the country, accusations the US has rejected in the past.
