ISLAMABAD: In a significant political development, the Islamabad police have registered a terrorism case against Sardar Akhtar Mengal, the head of the Balochistan National Party (BNP). The case was filed by Senate Joint Secretary Jamil Ahmed at the Secretariat Police Station and includes multiple charges, with terrorism being a primary accusation. Mengal is named alongside five other individuals in the case.
According to the details of the case, Mengal and his associates attempted to forcibly enter the Senate Hall while armed. It is alleged that two individuals, Meer Jahanzaib Mengal and Akhtar Nawaz, pushed security personnel while trying to gain entry with weapons. This incident reportedly unfolded during a National Assembly session that focused on the passage of the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment.
Earlier, Akhtar Mengal had been escorted out of the Senate gallery following a confrontation with dissident members of his own party. The political tensions within the BNP escalated further when Senator Qasim Ronjo, a dissenting party member, officially resigned from his Senate position. In a directive issued on Sunday, Mengal ordered both Ronjo and Senator Naseema Ehsan to resign immediately for their support of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
