DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Funeral prayers were held amid grief and tears for two young men from Dera Ismail Khan who were killed in the suicide attack at Masjid and Imambargah Khadija-tul-Kubra in Islamabad, drawing thousands of mourners.
The victims were identified as 23-year-old Syed Abbas Mehdi, an MBBS student from Thalla Fazal Shah, and 24-year-old Mamrez Ali Baloch, a Pakistan Army soldier from village Fateh. Both lost their lives in the tragic blast a day earlier.
Syed Abbas Mehdi’s funeral was conducted in Thalla Fazal Shah, while Mamrez Ali Baloch was laid to rest at the central Imambargah of his native village. Large numbers of local elders, political and social figures, religious scholars, relatives and citizens attended the ceremonies.
Strict security arrangements were in place during the funerals, with DSP City Malik Abid Iqbal, traffic in-charge Qaiser Hilal and heavy police contingents deployed to maintain order.
Syed Abbas Mehdi was buried at Kotli Imam Hussain graveyard, while Mamrez Ali Baloch was laid to rest in his ancestral cemetery in village Fateh. Mourners were visibly overcome with sorrow during the burial.
Addressing the gatherings, Allama Muhammad Ramzan Tauqeer, leader of the Shia Ulema Council Pakistan, and Tanveer Mehdi Advocate of Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen condemned the attack, criticizing the government and security agencies for failing to protect citizens and curb terrorism effectively. They called for urgent measures to ensure public safety.
The District Bar Association of Dera Ismail Khan observed a day of mourning in solidarity with the victims, offering special prayers for the deceased and the recovery of the injured while denouncing the act of terrorism. The tragic deaths have sent waves of grief across the district, with residents demanding immediate action to eliminate terrorism and strengthen security in the region.
