KARACHI: Karachi University is set to hold elections for four faculty seats on its syndicate on 8 January, with a closely contested battle anticipated between two main groups.
The most high‑profile contest is expected for the professor’s seat, where independent candidate Professor Dr Anila Amber Malik, a two‑time president of the University Teachers’ Association, faces off against Dr Haris Shoaib of the Karachi University Teachers Federation and Muhammad Ali from TAG.
For the associate professor category, Dr Mohsin Ali from TAG is contesting against Dr Muhammad Ayaz of the KUTF, while in the assistant professor group, TAG’s Dr Nida Ali and KUTF’s Syed Ghufran Alam are running alongside independent candidate Dr Syed Shah Hasan, who has withdrawn in support of Dr Nida Ali.
In the lecturer category, candidates include TAG’s Dr Kashif Riaz, independent candidate Syed Nasir Akhtar, and Shumaila Samad Khan from KUTF. The final list of candidates has been formally confirmed by Acting Registrar Professor Dr Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, who is also serving as the returning officer for the polls.
Faculty members consider these elections highly significant, as the syndicate serves as Karachi University’s top administrative and policy‑making body, where teacher representation plays a key role in shaping decisions. The university administration has finalized all electoral preparations, and candidates have already begun engaging with their voters ahead of the 8 January polls.
The elections are expected to set the tone for faculty participation in governance and could influence key policy directions within the university in the coming term.
