LAHORE: The Punjab government approved a new ordinance on Wednesday aimed at tightening enforcement of traffic regulations and significantly increasing fines for violations, in what officials described as a major push to improve road safety and reduce accidents across the province.
Under the ordinance, penalties for traffic offences have been sharply revised, with fines now ranging from Rs2,000 to Rs20,000 depending on the severity of the violation. Motorcyclists caught speeding face a fine of Rs2,000, while car owners are liable to pay Rs5,000. Running red lights will carry fines of Rs2,000 for motorcycles, Rs3,000 for three-wheelers, Rs5,000 for cars, and up to Rs15,000 for vehicles exceeding 2,000cc.
The ordinance also addresses issues such as overloading and environmental concerns. Three-wheelers exceeding permitted limits could face a fine of Rs3,000, while trailers violating load restrictions may be fined up to Rs15,000. Vehicles emitting excessive smoke will be penalized between Rs2,000 and Rs15,000, depending on the type of vehicle. Driving without a valid fitness certificate carries the heaviest penalties, including fines up to Rs100,000 and possible imprisonment, reflecting the government’s focus on safety compliance.
In addition, the new law increases penalties for overspeeding by up to 300% and makes the use of seat belts mandatory for both drivers and front-seat passengers. Transport authorities said the measures were intended to deter dangerous driving behaviors, improve compliance with traffic laws, and reduce the high number of road accidents that continue to claim lives each year in Punjab.
