WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has expressed private displeasure over Iran’s selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader. Speaking to Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade, Trump said he was “not happy” with the appointment, though no public statement has been issued.
The move follows the Assembly of Experts’ vote to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei as successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, after his death during recent US and Israeli attacks. The 88-member clerical body confirmed the decision shortly after midnight Tehran time, making Mojtaba the third supreme leader in the Islamic Republic’s history after Imam Khomeini and Ali Khamenei.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel will continue its operations targeting Iran’s leadership. In a video statement, he said, “We have an organised plan with many surprises to destabilise the regime and enable change,” signaling ongoing military and strategic measures.
The development underscores growing US and Israeli concern over the new Iranian leadership amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
