WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said he believes he should have a role in the selection of Iran’s next supreme leader, insisting he would not accept a successor who continues the policies of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In an interview with US media, Trump described efforts to appoint Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as “a waste of time” and stated that he would not recognize such a choice.
Trump compared the situation in Iran to Venezuela, saying the United States should seek a leader who is willing to cooperate with Washington, similar to the approach taken under Delsi Rodriguez’s administration in Caracas.
In Iran, the supreme leader is elected by the 88-member Assembly of Experts. However, ongoing regional tensions and recent attacks have made the selection process uncertain, leaving the country in a delicate political situation.
