KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), in coordination with the SIU police, carried out a joint operation on the basis of intelligence information against alleged extortionists in the Garden area of Karachi. During the operation, the suspects opened fire on law enforcement personnel, prompting retaliatory firing in which two suspects were killed.
The killed suspects were identified as Muhammad Hassan, also known as Belcha, and Tanveer Ali, also known as Titar. According to Rangers officials, the suspects were associated with extortion gang leaders Jameel Chhanga and Zahid Ladla.
Officials said the deceased suspects were involved in extortion activities across various areas of Karachi, including Soldier Bazaar and Jamshed Town. They were accused of distributing extortion slips to business centres, shopkeepers, builders, under-construction projects and restaurants, and of opening fire and spreading fear when extortion demands were not met.
The suspects were also reportedly involved in more than 300 incidents of street crime. Rangers officials said both were habitual offenders who had been arrested multiple times in the past and had served jail terms.
Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) appealed to the public to assist in crime prevention by promptly sharing information about such elements with the nearest Rangers check post, the Rangers helpline 1101, or by calling or sending a message via the Rangers Madadgar WhatsApp number 03479001111. The spokesperson assured that the identity of informants would be kept confidential.
