LONDON: The United Kingdom expressed grave concern on Friday regarding Israel’s extensive military operation in the occupied West Bank, urging the Israeli government to “exercise restraint” and adhere to international law. As the operation reached its third day, the death toll in the region has climbed to at least 19. Israel has characterized the raids in northern West Bank towns and refugee camps as “counter-terrorism” efforts.
However, the UK foreign ministry spokesperson criticized the methods employed, noting reports of civilian casualties and the destruction of infrastructure. The spokesperson emphasized the pressing need for de-escalation to avoid further regional instability. Additionally, the UK condemned remarks by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who proposed the construction of a synagogue at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem. The UK viewed these comments as a threat to the status quo of Jerusalem’s Holy Sites and condemned associated settler violence.
The British government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has consistently advocated for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and supported expedited aid deliveries. Although the stance of the current Labour government aligns with that of the previous Conservative administration, some speculate that Starmer, given his human rights background, might adopt a more stringent long-term position on Israel’s military actions. Labour continues to back the recognition of a Palestinian state as part of efforts to achieve a two-state solution and rejuvenate the peace process.
