UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution designating July 6 as “World Rural Development Day,” a milestone achieved through Bangladesh’s initiative. The resolution, which received broad support and was co-sponsored by Pakistan and 42 other countries, underscores the global commitment to advancing rural development.
The resolution was introduced by Bangladesh’s UN Ambassador, Muhammad Abdul Muhith, who highlighted the need to address critical issues such as poverty reduction, food security, socio-economic growth, and ecosystem restoration. This designation aims to align with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on eradicating poverty and ensuring equitable opportunities for all, particularly in rural areas. The choice of July 6 for this observance honors the founding of the Center for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in 1979.
CIRDAP’s establishment has been instrumental in promoting rural development across the Asia-Pacific region. The resolution calls upon all UN Member States, along with international and regional organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other stakeholders, to commemorate this day through activities relevant to their national and regional contexts. The goal is to foster sustainable development and enhance the living standards of rural populations worldwide.
In addition, the UN Secretary-General has been tasked with ensuring that all relevant entities are informed about the celebration of World Rural Development Day, promoting a united global effort towards improving rural advancement. This initiative reflects the international community’s recognition of the importance of rural development in achieving overall global progress.
