NEW YORK: The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly commenced on Tuesday, with a strong emphasis on conflict resolution and sustainable economic development. Philemon Yang, Cameroon’s representative and newly elected president of the Assembly, succeeded Dennis Francis, president of the 78th session.
In his inaugural address, Yang outlined his key priorities, including fostering peace, security, and addressing ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Haiti, and Ukraine. He also committed to prioritizing human rights and enhancing international legal frameworks throughout his term. UN Secretary-General António Guterres reflected on the challenges of the past year, citing persistent issues such as poverty, inequality, and ongoing violence. He also highlighted the record-breaking heat of the previous year, calling for cohesive global action to tackle these pressing issues.
“This is the place where solutions are made,” Guterres emphasized, reinforcing the critical role of the General Assembly in addressing global challenges. Outgoing president Dennis Francis expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Assembly, describing it as “the honor and privilege of a lifetime.” Although he was unable to engage directly with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Francis made efforts to highlight their conflict and advocated for a ceasefire and lasting political resolution. He also pointed to the escalating scale of human suffering worldwide, using Gaza as a poignant example of the humanitarian impact of ongoing conflicts.
The session is also significant for Palestine, which will participate more actively in the General Assembly for the first time. Following a May 10 resolution, Palestine, which holds observer status, has been granted enhanced rights to engage in UN meetings and conferences. The official opening of the 79th General Assembly is scheduled for September 22, featuring the “Summit of the Future.” World leaders will begin delivering speeches on September 24. The session is expected to be one of the most significant gatherings on the global political calendar, with leaders from 190 countries in attendance.
