KARACHI: Gulshan‑e‑Iqbal Town chairman Dr Fawad has warned that University Road has become a “death trap,” placing responsibility squarely on the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC).
Dr Fawad said the town administration is given neither authority nor accountability over the road, which falls under KMC jurisdiction. He noted that even the Red Line project contract was handled by KMC.
Highlighting financial mismanagement, he added that the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has collected over Rs20 billion, while KMC has gathered Rs4 billion in municipal taxes under the guise of electricity bills. Yet, funds for basic safety measures like manhole covers remain unspent.
Despite limited resources, the town has spent millions on maintenance, with union councils also contributing from their own budgets. Dr Fawad urged that KWSC be brought under the oversight of elected representatives and questioned how often Mayor Murtaza Wahab has consulted town chairmen in the past two years.
