NEW YORK: The United States has expelled an Iranian diplomat from the United Nations mission in New York over security concerns, according to officials.
The move involved Iran’s deputy ambassador Saadat Agha Jani, who was asked to leave the country quietly under a special procedure.A US official told a news website that the State Department ordered the expulsion in December last year on national security grounds.
The decision was kept low-profile at the time, and a formal note was sent to Iran’s UN mission in New York instructing the deputy envoy to leave the United States immediately.
The diplomat was removed under “Section 13 procedures”, a mechanism used to quietly expel foreign diplomats suspected of activities against US interests or national security without formally declaring them persona non grata.
No specific allegations were publicly made against Agha Jani.According to the report, US authorities later asked the diplomat’s children to leave the country in February. The US State Department confirmed that it had sent a notice to Iran’s mission, while the Iranian side declined to comment on the expulsion.#USDiplomacy #IranUSRelations #UNMission #NewYork #SecurityConcerns #DiplomaticTensions #ForeignPolicy #BreakingNews #InternationalRelations #Geopolitics
