NEW YORK: More than 90 schoolgirls were reported killed and some 50 more suck under the rubble in Iran following US-Israel’s “deliberate attack” on a Tehran’s school, deepening international alarm over a fresh escalation in the region.
Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told reporters that the strikes hit residential areas and a school in Minab, a city in Hormozgan province. He said the assault had a devastating human and emotional toll, with families mourning the loss of young lives and communities in shock. “Apart from numerous civilian residential buildings, the aggressors also hit a school… with more than one hundred children killed,” Iravani stated, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the strikes.
The Iranian diplomat expressed gratitude to countries that he said had taken a “principled position” in condemning the attacks, specifically naming Russia, China, and Pakistan. He noted that their support was crucial in convening an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council to address what Tehran described as “open aggression” by the United States and Israel.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported conducting additional airstrikes targeting Iran’s missile and air defence infrastructure. The Israel Defense Forces said the operation focused on ballistic missile arrays, aerial defence sites in western and central Iran, and previously untouched launch facilities, framing the strikes as an effort to undermine what it called the “Iranian terror regime’s capabilities.”
Humanitarian agencies have warned of escalating civilian casualties and the risk of regional instability, particularly given the targeting of schools and residential areas. Human rights observers condemned the loss of children’s lives as unacceptable and urged urgent international intervention.
In Minab, survivors described scenes of chaos: shattered classrooms, overturned desks, and anguished parents desperately searching for children. Local authorities have struggled to manage immediate rescue operations while coping with the profound grief sweeping the community.
The strikes have reignited fears of a wider confrontation, with diplomatic, humanitarian, and security implications continuing to unfold across the region.
