WASHINGTON: Reports from American media suggest that Iran has started deploying naval mines in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
According to intelligence sources cited by CNN, only a few dozen mines have reportedly been placed so far, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard maintains effective control over the waterway alongside its conventional navy.
Experts warn that Iran has the capability to deploy hundreds of mines, and since the start of the conflict, the Strait has been largely non-operational. Currently, around 15 million barrels of crude oil and 4.5 million barrels of refined fuel per day are affected, as Gulf producers like Kuwait and Iraq have no alternative routes for oil exports.
