WASHINGTON: U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned that the “most intense attacks” on Iran would take place today, stressing that the United States would not halt its military campaign.
Speaking about the ongoing operations, Hegseth claimed that Iran’s leadership had moved underground and said the world should not worry about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
He asserted that joint strikes by the United States and Israel had significantly damaged Iran’s military capability. According to him, more than 15,000 Iranian military targets had been hit so far.
The defence secretary said the U.S. and Israeli air forces were carrying out more than 1,000 strikes daily, which had severely weakened Iran’s military strength. He claimed that Iran’s air defence systems had nearly been destroyed and that the country no longer had an effective air force or navy.
Hegseth also said Iran’s missile strike capability had been reduced by about 90%, while drone attacks had dropped by 95%. He added that the objective of Washington and Tel Aviv was to completely destroy or disable Iran’s key military capabilities, including companies linked to its defence industry.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the attacks on Iran had entered their 14th day. He added that although Iran’s navy had been largely neutralised, the country still retained some ability to threaten commercial shipping and allied forces in the region.
