LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has sharply criticized former Prime Minister Imran Khan, accusing him of being the ‘mastermind behind the failed May 9 insurrection’ and condemning his offer of a conditional apology. In a statement on Thursday, Uzma Bukhari revealed that there had been a systematic effort to incite and brainwash people over the past year.
She explained that on the day of Khan’s arrest, his prominent associates stirred panic among his supporters by alleging that his life was in danger, which led to widespread protests. Bukhari also noted that Imran Khan had previously warned that if he were arrested again, his supporters would react violently. This was corroborated by international media reports indicating that PTI members had attacked military installations. The minister accused Khan of being the ‘mastermind of the May 9 insurrection’ and criticized him for seeking a conditional apology. She contrasted this with the severe nature of his actions, stating, “On one hand, he burns the house of Pakistan’s founder, and on the other, he shamelessly seeks a conditional apology.”
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which also governs at the federal level, has also weighed in on the matter. She declared that no apology can be given for acts of terrorism, asserting that an apology is meant for mistakes, whereas crimes demand punishment. She emphasized, “Attacking one’s own country is terrorism, not a mistake.”
