KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan has called for urgent action to restore water supply to Gulshan-e-Hadeed, where residents have been without water for seven months.
Speaking at a protest camp on the main road, Zafar warned that continued neglect of citizens’ grievances could prompt residents to block the National Highway. He criticised the PPP provincial government and Mayor Murtaza Wahab, blaming them for the city’s water crisis, which he attributed to mismanagement and incompetence.
Zafar said that the Bulk Water Supply Department had previously supplied water to Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Steel Town. If responsibility has now shifted to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, he added, the authority must ensure uninterrupted supply. He urged the mayor to provide additional machinery, pipelines, or manpower if necessary.
The JI leader accused officials at federal, provincial, and local levels of corruption and inefficiency. He said water supply in the area had been irregular since September 2024 and completely suspended since July 2025, despite repeated JI interventions and official correspondence.
Local residents reported that pipeline projects, costing between Rs 60 million and Rs 150 million, had failed to deliver water effectively. Zafar demanded that the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation fulfil its obligations or that the Bulk Water Supply Department be reactivated immediately.
The protest camp was also addressed by former UC Chairman Muhammad Islam, Ameer District Malir Syed Mufakhar Ali, and District Secretary Kamran Nawaz. Other participants included PASLO and JI leaders Zahid Askari, Aasim Bhatti, and Qadar Gul. JI pledged continued support for residents of Gulshan-e-Hadeed and the wider city, vowing to keep fighting for citizens’ basic rights and essential services.
