KARACHI: Recent rains and weather fluctuations in Karachi have led to a significant rise in flu and cough cases, according to local health officials. Dr. Halar Sheikh, a General Physician at Jinnah Hospital, reported a dramatic increase in the number of patients seeking treatment for viral infections. “Our hospital is receiving over 100 patients daily with flu and cough symptoms,” Dr. Sheikh stated.
This represents a substantial rise from the usual 20 to 30 patients seen under normal conditions. Dr. Sheikh attributed the spread of these infections to the consumption of cold beverages and outside food. She emphasized that children and elderly individuals are particularly vulnerable to viral infections during this period. Karachi has been experiencing intermittent heavy and light rainfall over the past few days, leading to an accumulation of standing water and mud on the streets.
This situation has contributed to increased filth and created a conducive environment for the spread of viral infections. Health experts are advising the public to take preventive measures, including avoiding cold drinks and street food, maintaining good hygiene, and seeking medical attention if symptoms of flu or cough appear. Authorities are also urged to address the sanitation issues caused by the rain to prevent further health complications.
