MEHAR: A woman was seriously injured after ceiling plaster collapsed in the children’s vaccination section of Taluka Hospital Mehar, also known as GIMS, causing panic among patients and staff.

Witnesses said the incident occurred suddenly, with a loud bang as part of the ceiling gave way. The injured woman, identified as Ms Hawa Dahoth, a resident of village Bundo in Mehar, sustained injuries to her head and leg. She was initially admitted to the emergency ward and later referred to a hospital in Larkana due to the severity of her condition.

Patients present at the time said they had brought their children for vaccination when plaster fell from the ceiling without warning, creating chaos in the room. They said the hospital had been handed over to GIMS two years ago and that renovation work had been under way. However, they described the building as old and structurally weak, alleging that while the exterior had been painted, the interior roof remained fragile.
They urged the administration to take immediate notice and reconstruct the building to prevent similar incidents.
Dr Abdul Waheed Daryani, Medical Superintendent of Taluka Hospital Mehar (GIMS), said the affected room belonged to the Social Welfare Department’s family planning section, where children were given chocolates. He confirmed that one woman had been injured and said a report had been submitted to the relevant authorities.
Amjad Ali, Assistant Director of the Population Department and in-charge of the centre, said PPHI and nutrition facilities operated there and that a large number of women and children visited daily. He warned that the roof was severely deteriorated and posed a risk of further accidents. A written report had been sent to the departmental secretary, the medical superintendent and the Deputy Commissioner of Dadu, requesting urgent reconstruction of the building to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
