KHYBER: In a case of women’s access to justice in Khyber District, female members of the District Resolution Council (DRC) at Lundi Kotil Police Station successfully resolved a complex and sensitive case for the first time. The case involved a widow whose husband had died in a traffic accident in 2024.
Following the incident, the deceased’s heirs were required under Islamic law to pay 3.5 million rupees in “diyat” compensation. However, the deceased’s brother collected the amount and refused to hand it over to the widow. After months of unsuccessful attempts to claim her rightful share, the widow approached the female DRC members for assistance.
Upon receiving the complaint, the women members of the DRC, with the support of Lundi Kotil police, conducted a thorough review of the case. Both parties were invited to multiple meetings, their perspectives heard, and all aspects considered. A resolution was ultimately reached that was accepted by both sides.

Lundi Kotil SHO Ishrat Ali praised the female DRC members, saying, “They pursued the case with dedication, integrity, and responsibility, ultimately ensuring that the full 3.5 million rupees were delivered to the widow. This is not just a single case resolution but a strong message to the entire district about the effectiveness of the DRC in delivering justice for women.”
The SHO noted that this was the first time in Khyber’s history that female DRC members had independently handled and concluded a case, highlighting their growing role and capabilities. He encouraged women in the area to approach the police’s female DRC for assistance, promising respect, confidentiality, and full legal support.
Local leaders and social activists have widely praised the initiative, noting that it not only provides justice for the widow but will also boost confidence among other women in the region, strengthening a culture of fairness and accountability in society.
