KARACHI: At least 13 people were killed and several others injured in a devastating collision on the M9 Motorway near Kathore on Friday, authorities said. The accident involved an oil tanker, a passenger bus, and multiple other vehicles, and according to officials, the coach was travelling on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash.
Rescue teams reported that the deceased included women and children, with some passengers falling from a bridge due to the impact of the collision. Numerous injured individuals were being transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Sindh Inspector General of Police, Javed Alam Odho, immediately directed police to reach the accident site and secure the area to facilitate both rescue operations and subsequent investigations.
Road accidents remain a frequent and deadly occurrence in Pakistan, where traffic regulations are often ignored and many rural roads are in poor condition. Earlier this month, three people, including a woman and her young daughter, died in a crash between a passenger van and a truck on the same motorway near Lunikot in Jamshoro district.
Commuters have long expressed concerns over the deteriorating state of the 136-kilometre M9 Motorway, which links Karachi and Hyderabad. Bumps, cracks, and uneven patches along the road have contributed to repeated accidents, highlighting the urgent need for safety upgrades and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
