SUKKUR: Journalists hold society up to a mirror and remain accountable to their conscience, Dr. Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, said while presiding over a New Year ceremony organized by the Sindh Children’s Academy.

The event featured poetry recitals, literary discussions, and an awards ceremony recognising dynamic journalists from Khairpur. Dr. Khushk also highlighted a new project to transform the Long Fakir land of Latif University into a cultural hub.

Renowned writer Qurban Mangi, who hosted the ceremony, noted that the Sindh Children’s Academy and Popat Publishing House have been organising academic and literary events for decades. Special guests, including Saeed Mangi, Director of the Institute of Art and Design at Sindh University, Jamshoro, praised cultural events for enriching life. Masrat Ali Mangi, Station Director of Radio Pakistan Khairpur, added that Khairpur has long been a centre of literature, and such events continue that tradition.

Other speakers included Sahib Khan Bhand, Deputy Director of the Sindh Information Department, who lauded the role of Popat and Sindh Children’s Academy in fostering scientific awareness, and poet Amr Iqbal, who expressed optimism that the new year would bring fresh paths in literature and publishing.

The poetry session was presided over by Fateh Mirani and featured recitations from Hajra Naz Malik, Ibrahim Khokhar, Taj Sirohi, Habdar Jagirani, Zamir Lashari, Manzoor Khamosh, Faqir Phliyo, Ahmed Ali Musafir, Azad Ansari, Suraya Sirhan Gul, Kifayat Gul, Sayel Bhanbhro, Sagar Safiullah Shar, Sultan Deepar, Karim Baloch and others. The event was conducted by Roshan Sheikh, while Sharif Abbasi presented the poetry of Latif.
