LAHORE: The Punjab police announced on Friday the successful elimination of the main suspect behind the devastating rocket attack on police personnel in the Machka area of Rahim Yar Khan. The attack, which took place in the volatile riverine katcha region, resulted in the tragic martyrdom of 12 police officers. The katcha area has long been a notorious haven for organized criminal gangs, particularly those involved in kidnap-for-ransom operations, with these gangs operating along the riverine borders of southern Sindh and central Punjab for decades.
According to police sources, approximately two dozen police officers were stationed at Machka Camp 2 in the riverine area. As they were returning to Rahim Yar Khan in two police mobile vans for a weekly holiday, one of their vehicles broke down due to stagnant floodwater in the region. Seizing the opportunity, riverine dacoits launched a rocket attack on the trapped police party, resulting in the deaths of 15 officers. Two additional policemen sustained injuries, and four others were initially reported missing.
Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar confirmed to local media that both Punjab and Sindh police had launched a coordinated operation in response to the attack. The operation involved 320 personnel from Punjab, with additional forces from Sindh also deployed to the area.
