SUKKUR: GIMS Hospital Khairpur has successfully performed an autologous bone marrow transplant on 17-year-old Sarmad Phulpoto, diagnosed with refractory Hodgkin lymphoma, officials said. The procedure involved collecting peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) over four sessions, cryopreserving them, and reinfusing them after intensive chemotherapy.
Dr Ghulam Asghar Keerio, clinical hematologist at GIMS, credited the hospital’s director, Dr Raheem Bux Bhatti, for transforming the facility into a centre of excellence offering world-class transplant services. He noted that support from the Sindh government has been instrumental in making advanced cancer care accessible, particularly to patients from rural areas.

The hospital has already conducted more than 140 bone marrow transplants, demonstrating its growing expertise in modern medical treatments. This latest success reinforces GIMS Khairpur’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare and expanding access to life-saving procedures in Sindh.
