NUR KHAN: A rare and symbolic moment took place at Nur Khan Airbase on Monday as the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, returned a salute from Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, during the start of his first official visit to Islamabad.

The exchange, witnessed by senior officials, was widely seen as a reflection of the warmth and depth of the bilateral ties between the two countries, highlighting decades of close political, military, and economic cooperation. Sheikh Mohammed’s aircraft was met with a high-profile reception upon entering Pakistani airspace, with Pakistan Air Force fighter jets escorting the plane and performing an aerial salute before it touched down in the capital.

On the ground, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir, federal ministers, and other senior civilian and military officials awaited the visiting leader. The prime minister and the army chief warmly embraced Sheikh Mohammed on his arrival, underscoring the personal dimension of the diplomatic engagement.

At the airbase, a guard of honor was presented and a traditional gun salute fired, marking the formalities of the reception. Observers noted that the gesture of the UAE president returning the army chief’s salute went beyond ceremonial protocol, symbolizing the mutual respect and enduring partnership between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
