KARACHI: Commissioner of Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has taken action against professional beggars operating at busy intersections and markets across the city. Following his directives, Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi and Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso launched coordinated operations in their districts, reporting the results directly to the commissioner.
The operations, carried out on Saturday with the support of local police, saw Assistant Commissioner Gulraz e Hajri Irfan Nizamani leading the East district effort, while Assistant Commissioners Ahmed Murtaza and Rana Sofiyan managed the South district. According to official reports, a total of 84 beggars were arrested, with 37 apprehended in the East district and 47 in the South. All were transported to the Edhi Home for care and rehabilitation.
The authorities emphasized that joint rehabilitation efforts will follow the arrests, with the Department of Social Welfare and various non-governmental organizations involved in providing long-term support. Commissioner Naqvi stressed the need for ongoing measures to prevent beggars at intersections and markets and directed that those enabling or supporting professional begging be identified and brought to justice. The city administration has committed to implementing comprehensive rehabilitation initiatives to address the issue effectively.
