KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has strongly condemned the death of a child who fell into an open manhole in Karachi’s Korangi Mehran Town, calling it a failure of the Sindh government, the city mayor and municipal authorities.
In a statement issued from the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters, an MQM-P spokesperson said the loss of a young life was the result of “gross negligence” by the Karachi mayor and the city administration. The spokesperson said uncovered manholes across the city had turned into “death traps” for residents.
The party demanded immediate accountability and strict action against Jamaat-e-Islami’s town administrators and the relevant civic bodies responsible for maintaining sewer infrastructure.
Referring to a similar fatal incident at Nipa Chowrangi earlier this year, the spokesperson said the repetition of such tragedies reflected the continued failure of local government representatives belonging to both the Pakistan Peoples Party and Jamaat-e-Islami.
The statement warned that unless open manholes were sealed without delay, such incidents would continue to claim lives. MQM-P also called on the authorities to provide immediate financial compensation to the affected family.
