DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Police registered a case and launched an investigation after the body of a newborn baby girl was found in the bathroom of the Family Ward at the Trauma Centre in Dera Ismail Khan, an incident that caused distress among hospital staff and local residents.
A case was registered at Cantt police station on the complaint of Muhammad Umair, the in-charge of the Trauma Centre, under section 338-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. According to the complaint, hospital staff discovered the body during routine cleaning of the Family Ward bathroom.
Police said it was suspected that an unidentified person or woman had brought the newborn to the hospital and abandoned her in the bathroom. After receiving information, police reached the scene, took the body into custody and initiated legal proceedings.
Officials said the investigation was being conducted from all angles and that CCTV footage installed in the hospital was being obtained to help identify those responsible. The hospital administration described the incident as deeply unfortunate and assured full cooperation with police.
Following the discovery, hospital authorities also began reviewing security arrangements to prevent similar incidents in the future. Police said the newborn’s body was shifted to the DHQ Hospital for post-mortem examination, adding that further legal action would be taken in light of the post-mortem report. Investigations were continuing.
