KARACHI: A local NGO, Alamgir Welfare Trust International (AWT), has announced a major welfare initiative for 2026 under its marriage support program. The organization said the scheme would complement its ongoing charitable activities across other sectors.
Upholding its long-standing tradition, AWT pledged to help more than 10,000 poor, orphaned, and deserving girls begin married life with dignity, with funds running into hundreds of millions of rupees. An AWT spokesperson said the initiative would provide dowries and other support to meet marriage-related expenses.
As with its other programs, assistance will be given without discrimination based on color, race, caste, or community. The focus, they added, would be on genuinely deserving families. In the initial phase, aid will primarily take the form of dowries, helping impoverished parents meet their daughters’ marital responsibilities.
Assistance is provided essential household items such as dinner sets, utensils, sewing machines, washing machines, suitcases, thermos flasks, irons, copies of the Holy Quran, blankets, bridal fabrics, and other daily necessities. The second category covers furniture, including wardrobes, beds, mattresses, and showcases with dressing tables. The third provides meals for the wedding procession, with food arranged for around 300 guests.
The trust said the support eases the financial burden on poor families and ensures dignified marriages for deserving girls. All assistance is provided under the head of zakat. The spokesperson appealed to philanthropists to contribute their zakat, urging them to help establish at least one poor girl’s household and become part of the trust’s welfare mission.
