KARACHI: A young man was shot dead in Karachi while trying to stop robbers fleeing after a heist. According to reports, the suspects had carried out a robbery at a plastic bags shop and were escaping when their motorcycle fell into a pit. As the man tried to apprehend them, the robbers opened fire, killing him instantly before fleeing the scene.
The victim, 25-year-old Muhammad Shoaib, was the eldest of four siblings and the main support for his parents. IG Sindh has taken notice of the killing and sought a report from DIG East. The incident occurred early on Friday morning in Shamsi Society, Al-Badr Society, within the limits of Alfalah Police Station in Korangi district. Shoaib’s body was taken to Jinnah Hospital by a Chhipa ambulance.
Alfalah police reached the scene, collecting evidence including two spent bullet shells. SHO Alfalah Rao Umair told Express News that Shoaib owned a shop selling plastic bags and disposable items. He was opening his shop when two armed men on a motorcycle arrived and looted Rs10,000 to Rs15,000 at gunpoint.
As the robbers tried to flee, their motorcycle fell into a pit near Lahore Hotel. Citizens sitting at a nearby hotel chased them, and Shoaib ran to the scene. In the ensuing scuffle, he removed the mask of one robber, prompting the suspects to open fire. Shoaib was shot in the neck and died on the spot, while the robbers escaped. Police have collected bullet shells and other evidence from the scene and are attempting to recover CCTV footage.
Shoaib’s younger brother, Muhammad Sohail, said his brother had been carrying Rs200,000 to Rs250,000 to deposit in a bank. He alleged that police presence in the area was negligible, claiming that patrols only arrive briefly before leaving. “Had the police been present, my brother would still be alive,” he said. The family has demanded the immediate arrest of the suspects and strict punishment for those responsible.
