KARACHI: Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi visited the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) headquarters on 8 January 2026, where he chaired a meeting to discuss matters of mutual interest. He was received by Chairman KPT Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed Sattar.

The meeting reviewed ongoing development projects at Pakistan Railways and KPT. Participants discussed pending issues, plans for multimodal passenger and pilgrim movement through integration with ferry services, and the strengthening of rail infrastructure connected to Karachi Port to support future cargo operations.

Chairman KPT requested that Pakistan Railways increase its capacity to transport cargo from the port. The minister said coordinated efforts were already underway and assured that, within the next five months, railways would significantly boost cargo handling from Karachi Port. Plans are in progress to operate four daily freight trains from the KPT area.

The KPT team also highlighted the need for Pakistan Railways to fully utilize guaranteed business, including the transportation of heavy cargo such as steel coils and rock phosphate. Both sides agreed to work closely to optimize resources, improve operational efficiency, and reduce overall logistics costs.
