KARACHI: Karachi authorities faced sharp criticism after human remains were reportedly dropped onto a street from a dumper during debris removal at the Gul Plaza site. Civic volunteers rushed to collect the remains and transported them to the city’s civil hospital, raising questions about the handling and safety of the ongoing recovery operation.
A local resident said the administration had promised careful search operations under the rubble, but the incident exposed serious lapses in procedure. The tragedy at the Gul Plaza shopping center, which was completely destroyed in last week’s fire, has already claimed dozens of lives.
Official figures indicate that 67 people have died, 77 remain missing, and 48 bodies have undergone post-mortem examinations. Of those killed, 15 have been positively identified. The mishandling of human remains has sparked public outrage, with calls for stricter oversight and better management of rescue and recovery efforts.
