ISLAMABAD: Myanmar’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency U Than Swe, visited Pakistan on an official tour and held a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad.

The Prime Minister welcomed the distinguished guest and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deepening its longstanding relationship with Myanmar, describing the ties as “mutually beneficial and historically grounded.” During their discussions, both leaders underscored the importance of expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, economic development, education, culture, and capacity-building.

They also highlighted the value of strengthening people-to-people contacts to foster greater understanding and collaboration between the two nations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Myanmar’s support for Pakistan’s efforts to combat human trafficking and welcomed Myanmar’s backing for Pakistan’s engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

U Than Swe expressed gratitude for the warm reception and conveyed messages of goodwill from his country. He highlighted Myanmar’s desire to enhance bilateral ties in areas of shared interest, emphasizing the potential for deeper economic, cultural, and educational collaboration.

The minister also thanked Pakistan for its timely assistance following the devastating earthquake of 28 March 2025, noting the relief efforts had been instrumental in alleviating the disaster’s impact.

The meeting was attended by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. Observers noted that the discussions reflected a pragmatic approach to bilateral diplomacy, combining immediate humanitarian concerns with a long-term vision for strategic and economic engagement between Islamabad and Naypyidaw.
